Cynthia V. Schulz

Director of Public Affairs and Strategy

Cindy Schulz leads the foundation’s internal and external communications, and assists the CEO with implementation of strategic initiatives. Cindy, who joined the foundation in December 2005, has an extensive background in communications, most recently with public and investor relations firm Dix & Eaton, where she served in a variety of roles during her 15-year tenure, including executive vice president and senior managing director. She also has corporate experience with Diamond Shamrock Corporation and the East Ohio Gas Company. 

Cindy graduated magna cum laude from Kent State University with a bachelor's degree in journalism. She is involved on nonprofit boards in the community, serving as board chair of the Kent State School of Journalism, vice chair of Southwest General Health Center, and a director of In Counsel with Women and the Union Club. She also serves on the board of Asurint, an automated background screening company.

She has been recognized by the YWCA as a 2005 Woman of Achievement, by Northern Ohio Live as a 2001 Rainmaker, and by Crain's Cleveland Business as a 2001 Women of Note. Kent State School of Journalism honored her with the 2002 William Taylor Distinguished Alumna Award. In 2009, she received the Lighthouse Award for career accomplishments and community service from the Greater Cleveland chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.

Debra Thornsberry

Debra Thornsberry

Public Affairs Assistant

Debbie Thornsberry has more than 12 years experience in a variety of administrative roles. Prior to joining the Cleveland Foundation, she spent time at Karpinski Engineering, the Cleveland Institute of Art, and van Dijk Pace Westlake Architects (now known as Westlake Reed Leskosky). She also has worked in the medical and hospitality industries. Debbie holds a bachelor’s degree in studio art and art history from Baldwin-Wallace College.

Susan Christopher

Public Relations Officer

Susan Christopher oversees media relations for the foundation and manages the communications needs of the foundation's grant making team. She has more than 20 years of communications experience, most recently as regional communications officer for the American Red Cross. Susan also worked as director of media communictions for MetroHealth System and manager of programs and special events for University Hospitals Health System. She began her career in broadcast journalism, working as a news producer for WKYC-TV Cleveland and a news reporter/anchor for WMAZ-TV, Macon, Georgia.

Susan is a cum laude graduate of Kent State University's School of Journalism with a degree in broadcast news journalism. She has also won numerous awards, including several Aster Awards for health care marketing and reporting and an Emmy Award for television production.

Elizabeth McIntyre

Elizabeth McIntyre

Public Relations Officer

Elizabeth McIntyre oversees the foundation's website, advertising, and donor communications efforts. Elizabeth joined the foundation in June 2011 after spending 20 years of her career at the Plain Dealer in Cleveland. She started at the paper as a copy editor in 1990 and worked her way up to her most recent position as deputy managing editor for content. In that position, she led the newsroom’s reporters and editors through the creative process of developing, writing, and editing stories for print and online. She directed story development for business and metro news departments and spearheaded coverage in sports and features.

Elizabeth graduated from Bowling Green State University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She is a graduate of the Leadership Cleveland class of 2006 and the Northwestern University Media Management Center’s Advanced Executive Program. She was a member of the Society of News Design and the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors.

Terry L. Pederson

Terry L. Pederson

Writer/Editor

Terry Pederson joined the Cleveland Foundation in June 2011. She has primary responsibility for the foundation’s editorial needs, which include speechwriting and writing for special projects such as the annual report, as well as editing and proofreading.

Terry has more than three decades of writing and editing experience, having served as communications manager for Cleveland Clinic’s Neurological Institute, a member of the editorial services group at Dix & Eaton, an assignment editor at the Detroit Free Press, and a reporter and editor at the Plain Dealer. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Kent State University.
