Purpose: The Renee Drefahl Scholarship Fund, established in 2011, awards an annual scholarship for post-secondary education to a member of the graduating class of Edgewood High School (Ashtabula County, Ohio). The purpose of the scholarship is to advance the skills, learning, and life chances of a deserving young person and to inspire him or her to pay it forward in service to others.
About the program: Renee Drefahl was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 15; the disease took her life at the age of 24. Throughout her life, Renee was passionate about learning. Although her illness caused her to frequently miss school, thanks to support from classmates, teachers, family, and friends, Renee became a National Honor Society member and graduated at the top of her high school class. Deeply committed to serving others, Renee pursued a degree in the medical field, and worked as a hospital nurse until she lost her final battle with cancer. From the outset, Renee endured hopeful periods of remission followed by debilitating relapses, but, through it all, she kept her sweet, loving nature and focused her energies outward, determined to make a difference with her life.
This scholarship fund is established in memory of Renee: to commemorate her inspirational spirit; to celebrate her love of family, friends, and those who came under her care; and to perpetuate her merciful spirit of selfless compassion for those in need.
