Purpose: To provide scholarship support for a college junior or senior pursuing a nursing career or a member of St. Clair Memorial Hospital’s nursing staff who is interested in pursuing additional nursing education. Preference shall be given to Greater Cleveland residents attending an accredited Ohio college of nursing.

About the program: The Ruth Alice Jacobs Roe Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the family and friends of Ruth Alice Jacobs Roe in February 2003 to honor her years of dedicated service to humanity as a registered nurse. The purpose of the fund is to provide two annual scholarships: one to a member of St. Clair Memorial Hospital’s nursing staff who is interested in pursuing additional nursing education, and one to a junior or senior in college pursuing a nursing career. Preference shall be given to Greater Cleveland residents attending an accredited Ohio college of nursing. Additional resources for nursing majors have been contributed from the narrowly restricted funds of the Cleveland Foundation that have been designated support for persons pursuing a nursing career.

Eligibility: 
To be eligible, you must meet one of the two qualifying situations detailed below. You must either be:

(1) A degree-seeking junior or senior at an accredited Ohio four-year college or university who:

  • Is enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in nursing program or other higher degree pre-licensure nursing program (NOTE: Students enrolled in associate degree or diploma nursing programs are not eligible.)
  • Has successfully completed at least one nursing course with a clinical component
  • Will be attending full time (i.e., 12 or more semester credit hours or the equivalent)
  • Has a minimum 2.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale
  • Demonstrates financial need
  • Is preferably a resident of Greater Cleveland

OR

(2) A registered nurse at St. Clair Memorial Hospital in Mt. Lebanon, Pa., who:

  • Is pursuing additional nursing education
  • Is actively enrolled or has been accepted into a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing or higher degree program in nursing
  • Has a minimum 2.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale
  • Demonstrates financial need

Selection process: A selection committee will base its scholarship decisions on the completed application, evidence of commitment to a career in nursing, academic performance, financial need, and ability to benefit. 

Award process: The annual award amount will be based on the performance of the fund and number of applicants selected.  There have generally been two awards at $700 each annually. Formal notification of award will be made by the Cleveland Foundation to the selected recipient(s). Awards will be paid to the school for the benefit of the student and must be applied to tuition, fees, books, supplies, and/or equipment required for coursework. 

Recipient requirements:

  1. Maintain full-time enrollment status (unless awarded for part-time)
  2. for each term (min 2.0 GPA required)
  3. A thank you note to the donors and selection committee members for this fund is not required but always appreciated and may be or mailed to the Cleveland Foundation, Scholarships, 1422 Euclid Avenue, Suite 1300, Cleveland, Ohio, 44115.

One-time award: This is a one-time award and may not be renewed for subsequent years.
