This August, the Cleveland Foundation celebrated a historic milestone in Black philanthropy. For the first time ever, a U.S. community foundation has established philanthropic partnerships with every local chapter of the Divine Nine—the nation’s historically Black fraternities and sororities that have shaped generations of leadership, service and civic power.

The event brought together all nine local chapters alongside more than a dozen Black-led organizations—including The Links, Incorporated, 100 Black Men and The President’s Council — to celebrate a shared commitment to building Black generational wealth, opportunity and philanthropy in Cleveland and beyond.

“We are thrilled to have the Divine Nine join us as philanthropic partners because in one voice, each fraternity and sorority is stating they're working together to assist the community through support and service,” says Terri Eason, senior director of philanthropy initiatives. “It’s an honor for the Cleveland Foundation to support the Divine Nine and not only advance their philanthropy and mission but to ensure we are all working toward one common goal.”

Eason—a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated—shares more about the significance of the partnership and its impact on Black philanthropy.

Can you share a bit about your own connection to the Divine Nine?

I joined the Divine Nine as an undergraduate member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated- Delta Gamma chapter on the campus of Penn State University in the spring of 1988.  After graduation, I returned home to Cleveland and transferred to the first and oldest graduated chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated- Alpha Omega Chapter.  As a Silver star and life member, I have been honored to serve in various leadership roles locally, regionally and internationally to advance our mission and sisterhood for over 37 years.

What’s so significant about this partnership?

These organizations have been empowering the Black community for more than a century. By partnering with the Cleveland Foundation as a philanthropic hub, these dynamic local chapters are creating a new opportunity to collaborate and amplify their impact—both toward their individual missions and collectively to create significant change in the community.

How do these funds fit into the Cleveland Foundation’s strategy and vision?

These funds are more than just financial vehicles. They reflect a set of values and are built to last generations—an example of the power of collective giving the Cleveland Foundation was built on. In Cleveland, we’ve always understood that our greatest strength lies in our ability to come together. This new platform for philanthropic collaboration will help us all advance toward a vibrant Northeast Ohio where no Clevelander is left behind.
