Our #SummerOfPurpose blog series follows this year’s Cleveland Foundation Summer Interns as they reflect on 11 weeks spent working with Cleveland-area nonprofit and public sector organizations. In today’s blog, we hear from Elise Provident, who spent her summer at Cleveland Public Theatre assisting with grantwriting and auditing.

Why did you initially decide to participate in this internship program?
I was looking for a local internship opportunity related to arts administration, and one of my professors suggested I look at the Cleveland Foundation Summer Internship Program. I was already relatively familiar with the Cleveland Foundation, so I knew coming into their program that it would be the best for me at this point in my career. When I saw the list of host organizations, I knew instantly that Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) would be a great fit. Looking back, everything worked out perfectly!
What was the most valuable aspect of your internship experience?
I have met such wonderful people in my short time at CPT. My supervisors Melissa, Hannah and Jen are wonderfully supportive of my curiosity, offering me the flexibility to choose what, when, and how I learn. Together, they gave me the best development crash course a girl could ask for, teaching me about donor relations, fundraising, grantwriting, and more. I also loved getting to know my fellow interns, most of whom I never would have met without the Cleveland Foundation bringing us together. Our cohort is incredibly diverse, and I have already learned so much from them this summer.
What was the most challenging aspect of your internship experience?
This was my first time working in the nonprofit sphere, so the first few weeks were a learning curve. Nothing can replace hands-on experience when learning a new skill, which is something I love about the SIP model. I was also juggling a lot of hats this summer as I prepared for the GRE and graduate school applications. Thankfully, my team has been so kind and understanding about my obligations.
How did this internship helped you grow professionally & personally?
This internship provided me the opportunity to dive headfirst into nonprofit work at a nationally-renowned public theatre. As an aspiring arts professional, this kind of experience is invaluable to my personal and career development. I also feel more confident in my ability to face upcoming challenges; I will hopefully be starting graduate school next fall, and this internship gave me the confidence to be bold, put myself out there, and try new things.
Where would you take a friend who is visiting Cleveland for the first time?
My favorite place in the world (and the reason I am an art history major) is the Cleveland Museum of Art. I know that building like I know the back of my hand, making me a great unofficial tour guide for friends and family. Afterwards, we would go to Tommy’s in Coventry for sandwiches and milkshakes. I love that they have options for people with different dietary restrictions.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying for the Cleveland Foundation Summer Internship Program?
Spend time deliberately crafting your application materials. I was complimented by both sets of interviewers on my thorough application, and I think the time I spent on it set me apart from other applicants with similar qualifications or backgrounds. If you feel that certain aspects of your resume are lacking, do not be afraid to acknowledge them. I have found that employers prefer candidates who are honest, self-aware, and eager to learn, even if they lack some experience. I had no nonprofit experience when I interviewed for the SIP, but I exhibited traits and skills that made me competitive nonetheless.
